Read on below for Aneta’s tips on how to keep whites white the natural way. Stay tuned for another post featuring Aneta chatting about how great hemp is.

Keeping whites white seems impossible to do naturally but it is possible without toxic chlorine bleach. Here are a few tips:

    • Hang your whites to dry in the sun. The sun is used to naturally brighten whites. Salt and sunlight have been used for thousands of years to make white textiles. Its also free 🙂
    • Spot treat any stains right away. “Buncha Farmers” stain stick is a great natural alternative. (It’s also plastic free!) Its a stick of soap to rub on wet fabric until it lathers. Let sit 10-15 minutes and then scrub out. Grab a hold of the fabric with two fists, with the stain in the middle and rub it together until it fades.
    • Add a bit of white vinegar to your wash to keep whites brighter in general. White vinegar is also excellent at removing smells, think musty towels. Let soak for an hour in vinegar diluted in water then wash as usual.
    • As a last resort if you have a stubborn stain, you can find a powdered colour-safe bleach. The Soap Works makes an environmentally safe one that is chlorine and phosphate free, odour free, doesn’t yellow whites and highly concentrated. It’s also packaged in a paper bag. A little bit goes a long way. Add a tablespoon or two to a tub of some very hot tap water to dissolve. Top off with cold water and submerge your items. Let sit for a 30 minutes or more then wash as usual.

If all else fails, dye your white, natural fiber, clothing at home using things like black tea, avocado pits or onion skins! 🤍
